A Short Workout is Better Than No Workout

When people experience anxiety or depression, exercise and nutrition are the last thing they think about.

Generally, persons who are depressed lack motivation. Research shows that exercise helps reduce anxiety and improves mood. While exercise does not replace psychotropic medication, working out can surely help persons relax and feel better.

How does it work?

  1. Exercise releases neurotransmitters and endorphins, which reduce depression.

  2. Figure out what physical fitness you enjoy doing. (e.g., walking, jogging, biking, working out at the gym or at home) then select a fitness program.

  3. Talk about it with your doctor (primary doctor and mental health practitioner)

  4. Set a realistic goal and tailor a plan to meet your needs.

  5. Schedule weekly workouts, as you schedule weekly sessions and daily medications

Research indicates that those who engage in regular exercise (at least 4 times a week or more) report reduced anxiety and improved mood. Exercise releases chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which improve your mood by reducing pain and inducing euphoria. Furthermore, it increases your body temperature, which produces a calming effect.

Psychologically, exercise builds self- confidence.

Start small and think about how you can improve your life. Your wellness plan may include any number forms such as; weekly therapy sessions, social weekly interactive activities, medication (if needed), nutrition (plus supplements if needed), support from friends and/or family in combination with exercise.
